Online votes to help decide Miss Universe 2011

Miss Universe-PHL bet Shamcey Supsup turns pressure into positivity: Instead of letting herself be overcome by the pressure of matching the fourth place finish of Maria Venus Raj in last year’s Miss Universe pageant, 2011 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Shamcey Supsup would rather use it “in a positive way.”

The General Santos City native is determined to seize the much-coveted title, telling “The Buzz” in a taped interview aired Aug. 7, “…If you’re destined to win, you would get the crown. And I believe I’ve worked hard, I have the discipline, I’m determined and I have the support from everyone. I believe we have a chance.” (mb.com.ph)

Miss SA pays courtesy call to Zuma: President Jacob Zuma yesterday received a courtesy call from Miss South Africa Bokang Montjane at Mahlamba Ndlophu in Pretoria. Zuma wished her well and said: "I am confident that she will represent us well as an ambassador of South Africa". The two discussed Montjane's youth campaigns, which include teenage pregnancies and education. (sowetanlive.co.za)

Look out Universe, says Scherri-Lee : Not so long ago, the local Miss Universe pageant was considered so passé, organisers scrapped the competition, sending a delegate chosen by a modelling agency, instead. But in 2004, Hawkins – then a little-known cheerleader and part-time model – won the international Miss Universe tiara and became a star, not to mention a very rich woman thanks to endorsements and a multi-million-dollar contract with Myer.

A year later, the national pageant was back. Young women have been clamouring to follow in Hawkins’ footsteps ever since, seeing the event as their ticket to fame and fortune despite the stereotypes attached to beauty pageants.

But Biggs – who put a communications degree on hold to pursue modelling – says there’s more to the event than you might think. Although, yes, she does have to parade in a bikini.

“People criticise it for being a beauty pageant – I understand that because there’s a beauty component, but it’s a minor part; you can’t just be beautiful, you have to have the full package. You have to be socially aware and know what’s going on around you; you have to have wit and personality. I’m not saying this is me, of course, but it’s definitely what we’re working towards.”

As for that bikini? Well, Biggs reckons that’s what most Aussies wear every weekend anyway. “Rachael Finch [Miss Universe Australia 2009] put it well when she said that, as Australian women, we’re proud of our bodies, so showing them off isn’t a big deal. I agree, it’s about being proud of who we are. I’m not the skinniest person and I have issues with my body. But, ultimately, I’m proud to be happy and healthy and to present those values, rather than say, ‘Hey, look at me in a bikini.’”

Asked would she like to follow Hawkins’ lead, Biggs sighs, as if she’s already tired of the questions about her famous predecessor. “A five-million dollar Myer contract? Yes, please! Look, Jennifer has done very well for herself and if I do half as well as her, I’ll be very happy. She’s an inspirational young woman.”

So is it a case of ‘move over Jennifer, it’s time for Scherri-Lee’? “I don’t know about that,” she laughs. “Imagine me taking her place – I’d be hated. No, she’s a very smart businesswoman, but I want to do my own thing.” (heraldsun.com.au)

Beauty Queen on a Mission : On a recent weeknight on the Upper East Side, the current Miss China, a beauty who stands 6 feet tall in stockings, was learning how to mingle at a dinner party.

"I am Rosaline, pleased to meet you," the beauty queen said to the bankers and lawyers present, giving an English version of her Chinese name, Luo Zilin.

"Tell them about your dress Rosaline," prompted her host, Yue-Sai Kan.

"It is Calvin Klein, isn't it beautiful?" Miss China announced with a practiced twirl.

* Can China 'Win' Miss Universe?

The performance was but a small part of Ms. Kan's determined bid to make this Miss China into Miss Universe. Like many champions before her, if she wins, Miss China's greatness will have been forged on—or at least near—New York City's mean streets.

For the past few weeks, Ms. Luo has been living in Ms. Kan's posh Sutton Place townhouse, taking a crash course in Western manners and mores in advance of the pageant, to be held in São Paulo on Sept. 12.

"This is like trying to create a gold-medalist swimmer," said Ms. Kan, a cosmetics mogul and media personality who is organizing China's Miss Universe bid. "If you don't train her well there is no way you can throw her into an Olympic-type situation and expect her to win. In the past these women were not trained. That's why they didn't win."

The problem with Chinese contestants at the Miss Universe pageant? According to Ms. Kan, they've been, well, too Chinese. "The girls can't be all that Chinese—it's Miss Universe. They've got to be quite savvy about the world and what I am trying to do is to expose them to as many savvy things as possible." (online.wsj.com)

Miss Universe outfit puts local designers' taste to the test: Scherri-Lee Biggs showcases the 2011 Australian national costume for Miss Universe. Fashion designers who created looks for Miss Universe pageants deserved a special bravery award according to designers and commentators.

Once upon a time dressing Miss Universe was considered a career highlight for designers. However over the past decade it has been likened to loaning a dress to Paris Hilton or any other fallen Hollywood starlet - a great PR exercise which comes laden with brand-destroying negativity and pessimism.

Staying away from pageant gowns ... Ray Costarella. "I've been asked several times to create the national cossie. I won't go there. It's a difficult one," designer Aurelio Costarella tweeted yesterday after Australia's national costume for the Miss Universe pageant was unveiled.

"It's always a bit wrong," he said of the costume segment of the competition. Scathing media reports and social media coverage regarding the Kooey designed yellow one-piece swimsuit and technicolour skirt to be worn by Scherri-Lee Biggs circulated quickly.

However a lack of understanding and a clear definition of Australia's "national dress" could be to blame. Fashion commentators suggested national costume creations for Australia's Miss Universe were ostentatious and lacked sophistication.

"[It is] absolutely the reason I've not taken up the offer. It always ends up looking like a Priscilla cast off," Costarella said. Celebrity stylist and Fashion TV Australia presenter Amber Renae said pageant land was a whole world unto itself.

"They [pageants] love all things ostentatious and outrageous which we would never wear on the street, but often translates well to that arena," she said. (smh.com.au)

Ex-Miss Universe to wed TV dance partner: Former Miss Universe Australia Rachael Finch has confirmed her engagement to her Dancing With The Stars partner.

"From the first day I met Mish, I knew he was going to be my side no matter what," Finch told Who magazine. "We just never dreamed that doing the show would mean we would end up finding each other." (news.ninemsn.com.au)

Miss Colombia confidently heads to Miss Universe: Miss Colombia, with a sexy new body, is ready to take on the 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant taking place September 12 in Brazil.

According to a report from news website CM&, the 2010 Miss Colombia Catalina Robayo is all set to make an impression on the judges at Miss Universe, the most important beauty contest in the world.

Thanks to a special work-out routine with her trainer, Robayo feels more confident than ever in her hot new body. "I'm more toned and more slender, I've trained very hard since I've been chosen as Miss Colombia in Cartagena last year. All of this has been complemented by a good diet so that I have a healthy weight for someone of my height."

Robayo has been criticized for losing her former curves, and acknowledged that she has lost a few pounds due to pressure during the reign. However, she said that the overall experience of being Miss Colombia has been amazing.

Besides looking her physical best, Robayo has also prepared a breathtaking wardrobe to wow the judges. It is reported that she is the only national Miss taking more than 20 dresses to the beauty pageant. And all 20 dresses are crafted by different Colombian designers.

Robayo added that she chose so many designers in order to have more chances to show off the creative talent in Colombia. (colombiareports.com)

Venus gives advice to Shamcey for upcoming Miss Universe pageant: "Just be yourself.” This is what Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner Up Venus Raj has advised Miss Universe 2011 contender Shamcey Supsup relating to the latter competing in the upcoming Miss Universe 2011 pageant.

" And kung ano lang ‘yung talagang kaya niyang ipakita, ‘yun lang ang ipakita niya. Hindi naman puwedeng mag-pretend siya nang kung sino siya; kailangan talaga ‘yung kaya niya," said Venus in a report posted by Bomboradyo on its website Aug. 3.

The Bicolana beauty says she’s “nervous” for Shamcey as the latter is relatively new in the world of beauty pageants. Despite this, Venus believes that with her “guts,” Shamcey will bring pride to the country in the level that she did a year ago when she was hailed as 4th runner up in the same competition.

Apart from being true to herself, Venus added that Shamcey could do well to try and be more independent, as the chances of bringing her friends and family to Brazil are quite slim. (mb.com.ph)

Miss Earth wonders where Filipino men are: “Where are all the Pinoy men?” Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria of India wonders. Falling in love with Filipino men is not a far-fetched idea for her and the two other titleholders of the pageant. The trio of beauties are currently visiting the country.

“If someone sweeps me off my feet here, then why not? But nobody has approached me,” Faria said teasingly during a press conference held recently at the Discovery Suites in Pasig.

“I love Russian men, but Filipinos are also beautiful,” added Shchukina. (entertainment.inquirer.net)

VENUS RAJ: A Rajini from Venus

Venus Raj
Venus Raj
If names have power, Maria Venus Bayonito Raj’s a composite of forces that almost exactly animates her now universally known physical beauty and spiritual grace.

Etymological fans and punsters – even astrological buffs – would find, like most beauty pageant enthusiasts, a lot to talk about the most recent Filipina beauty titlist. Go figure.

“Venus means “love” and “sexual desire” in Latin, and has connections to venerari (to honour, to try to please) and venia (grace, favour) through a possible common root in an Indo-European wenes, comparable to Sanskrit vanas for “lust, desire.”

“Venus’s name might embody the function of honours and gifts to the divine when seeking their favours: such acts can be interpreted as the enticement, seduction or charm of gods by mortals. The ambivalence of this function is suggested in the etymological relationship of the root venes with Latin venenum (poison, venom), in the sense of “a charm, magic philter.”

“Due to her early association with Aphrodite in the interpretatio graeca, it is hard to establish what characteristics the natively Italic Venus may have had. Ushas is linked to Venus by a Vedic Sanskrit epithet ascribed to her, vanas (female) loveliness; longing, desire”, which is cognate with Latin Venus (wen, to desire).”

“Venus was known to ancient civilizations both as the “morning star” and as the “evening star”, names that reflect the early understanding that these were two separate objects. It is classified as a terrestrial planet and it is sometimes called Earth’s “sister planet” due to similar size, gravity and bulk composition.”

“Raj is an ethnic group found in the Philippines known by their mix of Indians and Filipinos.”
“Rajini is female form of Raj.”

“Raj or Rajini as a name means: You have a very individual, reserved, serious nature; You prefer to be alone with your own thoughts, rather than in the company of others; Your name either restricts or enhances spontaneity in association and the fluency of your verbal expression; When you are required to express yourself in personal matters requiring finesse ad diplomacy, you feel awkward and embarrassed; Although you realize perfectly well what is expected of you, you are unable to find the right words, and hence you end up saying something inappropriate in a candid way; You can express your deeper thoughts and feelings best through writing; While your name creates the urge to be creative, independent and original, it limits also your self-expression and friendly congeniality with a tendency to be moody.”

Her story according to Wikipedia

Maria Venus Raj was born (July 7, 1988) to an Indian father and a Filipina mother. Raj was taken by her mother to Bato, Camarines Sur in Bicol Region, Philippines as an infant and was registered by an aunt as a Philippine-born child to Roman Catholic parents. Raj grew up with her mother, a former tenant farmer and dressmaker who brought Maria Venus Raj up as a child.

Raj lived in a nipa hut made of wood, bamboo and anahaw leaves with no electricity in the middle of a sprawling rice field in the rural Bato town for more than twenty years. She allegedly used rice paddy dikes for her early training where she eventually developed her distinct catwalk.
The youngest among five children, Maria Venus Raj started joining local beauty pageants. She also joined oratorical contests at San Vicente High School where her English teacher served as her coach. With her victories in major contests, Venus Raj had started to buy land on installment basis for her mother as a means of improving their livelihood.

Raj obtained her Diploma in Communications Arts, major in Journalism, at Bicol University in Albay, with Latin honors (Cum Laude). She graduated through the scholarship that she received from the Francis Papica Foundation. Back in the Philippines, she works as an Information Assistant for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region V. In addition to this, she also works as a part-time fashion model in her native Bicol and Manila.

Following her victory as Miss Bicolandia 2007, Raj represented Legazpi Cityand competed in the Miss Philippines-Earth 2008, and was named as Miss Philippines Earth Eco Tourism 2008, and fourth runner-up to eventual Miss Earth 2008 winner Karla Henry on May 11, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria, Manila.

After joining Miss Philippines-Earth in 2008, Raj took a break from beauty contests and worked as an Information Assistant at the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. In 2010, Raj screened for the Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant and made it to the official list of candidates. On March 6, 2010, she was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Universe during the pageant’s Grand Coronation Night at the Araneta Coliseum. She won the right to represent the Philippines in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. She also won the special awards Best in Long Gown, Best in Philippine Terno, and was a co-winner for Miss Friendship - a rare feat for a major title winner.

A few weeks after her coronation, Raj was dethroned by Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. citing alleged inconsistencies between her birth certificate and the personal account of her birth. Raj was briefly replaced by second runner-up Helen Nicolette Henson since first runner-up Diane Elaine S. Necio, also from Bicol was only 17 years old and did not meet the age requirement policies of Miss Universe.

But, on April 10, 2010, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. allowed Raj to reclaim her title due to humanitarian reasons. An additional requirement that Raj should legally obtain a valid Philippine passport as proof of her true citizenship was also requested by the pageant organizers. On May 19, 2010, the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs issued Raj a Philippine passport thereby attesting to her Filipino citizenship. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Raj is a Philippine citizen by virtue of the jus sanguinis principle (“right of blood”), a basic right provided by the Philippine Constitution which bestows upon a person the citizenship of his father or mother regardless of where the person was born, thus declaring her of Filipino citizenship.

Upon the issuance of her Philippine passport, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. announced that they are reinstating Raj. Currently, Raj holds the record as the first-ever dethroned Binibining Pilipinas to have successfully attempted for a reinstatement of a Binibining Pilipinas crown.

In August 2010, Raj flew to the United States and took part in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. As part of the six delegates which were handpicked for a media tour, Raj along with Jesinta Campbell of Australia, Natalia Navarro of Colombia, Sarodj Bertin of Haiti, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico, Mariana Vicente of Puerto Rico and Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez were scheduled for several television appearances prior to the actual pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada.

During the Miss Universe question and answer portion, Raj was asked by American actor William Baldwin about the biggest mistake that she made in her life and what she did to make it right, to which she simply replied that she had never made any big mistakes in her life. Raj received the highest rating in the Miss Universe website, with 3.54 points, the highest-ever for a Filipina delegate. In an event held in Diablos Cantina at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, Raj won in a Chicken Wing Eating Contest, increasing her popularity even more during the run of the pageant.

Finally, she placed fourth runner-up to Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.

Miss USA’s plane makes emergency landing

Former Miss Universe Amelia Vega to Release First Album: The month of August has brought good news for former Miss Universe Amelia Vega with the release of her debut album "Agua dulce" and the beginning of a Latin American tour along with her famous uncle, singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra.

Vega does not hide her happiness when she speaks about her musical project, two years in the making, which will hit store shelves on Aug. 30 and includes various musical genres and even a duet with merengue icon Johnny Ventura.

"I'm very grateful to him. For me it's an honor that he agreed to record with me," the Dominican beauty said in an interview with Efe. "Agua dulce," which Vega produced along with Venezuela's Archie Peña, who has worked with the likes of Madonna, Shakira and Ricky Martin, has 10 songs.

The 2002 Miss Universe said that the variety of genres on her album comes in response to having been raised within a family of musicians, among whom were a grandmother who played the piano and accordion, a great-grandfather who sang opera and a female cousin who did the same.

"I wanted to combine those generations of musical tastes with my own. It took me a lot of time to create that musical identity and to give it coherence but (make them) different. They can have a marriage, they have a sound that unites them," she said. (latino.foxnews.com)

Sorry Miss China you're just too Chinese... Eastern beauty shows Western promise in her bid to become Miss Universe: They haven't won the Miss Universe title in over a decade, so this year the Chinese have decided they're not leaving anything to chance. While their contender Lou Zilin is undeniably stunning, her team are worried she'll never scoop the prestigious title because she's just too Chinese.

They've decided the old Oriental ideal of a shy, retiring type, who giggles behind her hand at the slightest compliment just won't make the grade in this modern world. So they've packed 24-year-old Miss Zilin off to New York where she can learn the ways of the wild west. (dailymail.co.uk)

Beauty queen and husband escape drunk driving charges: Police caught Vanessa Mendoza, the former Miss Colombia, and her husband driving while intoxicated late Saturday night, gossip news site Sweet revealed.

Like many soccer-obsessed Colombians, Vanessa and her husband Andres celebrated Colombia’s triumph over South Korea Friday. After getting their fill of Bogota’s booze-and-rumba scene, the couple decided to drive home.

Which of the two lovebirds was the driver remains unknown. When the Colombian police pulled the couple over on the highway, Vanessa played the “don’t you know who I am?” card, and escaped with a mere warning. The officers apparently followed the 2001 Miss Colombia beauty contest in which the fashion model became the first Afro-Colombian queen. (colombiareports.com)

She went on to say that Supsup should do well to use an interpreter if there’s one available. According to Marquez, the competition will be a great opportunity for Supsup to highlight the beauty inherent to the Filipino language. (mb.com.ph)

The beauties proved they were cut from a different cloth, drawing away from the stigma that pageant girls are not exactly the “brightest bulbs”. The contestants walked in three different sets of clothing; traditional, swimwear and lastly evening wear. The traditional dress was a favourite for the audience who applauded and cheered excitedly as each of the ladies walked in on stage adorned in cultural costumes.

While some wore the traditional khiba (German print skirt), a doek, and a blanket, others wore matlalo (leather costumes) and some dazzled in traditional Herero style dresses walking to the sounds of folklore artist Ntirelang Berman who sat beside the stage playing the Segaba. He was wearing a traditional tshega, alongside Karabo, also a traditional artist. (gazettebw.com)
