Miss Earth 2011 eyes Bollywood

Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria
Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria
Like Aishwarya Rai (former Miss World), Zeenat Aman (former Miss Asia), Sushmita Sen (who won Miss Universe in Manila in 1994) and other Misses India who became international beauty-titlists, 2011 Miss Earth Nicole Faria may end up in showbiz. As Miss India, the 21-year-old model won an entry into Bollywood as one of her prizes.

This was revealed to Funfare by my Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre who talked to Bangalore-born Faria when she visited New York recently.

“Nicole was like a breath of fresh air in the steamy weather of New York City,” reported Edmund. “She came to fulfill her commitments as the reigning queen of this, um, planet. At daytime, she made heads turn as she walked down the streets of Manhattan. She was in tight blue jeans, flip-flops and white tank top that highlighted her tiny 22.5 inch-waistline and 5’9” frame. At dusk, she showed up in formal functions all dolled up like a royalty in a resplendent gown.”

Accompanied by Fil-Am international jewelry designer Ramona Haar, the official jeweler of Miss Earth, Nicole met with NYC’s creme de la creme, including members of the Fil-American and Indian-American communities, many of whom, interestingly, could recall her coronation as Miss Earth in Vietnam last December.

“I’m surprised some people in New York can recognize me,” Nicole giggled like a little girl. “They would say, ‘You’re the beauty queen,’ although some couldn’t tell what my title was. Hahahaha!”

At the Fil-Am law offices of Abad, Constancio & Mallonga at the Empire State Building, Nicole was an instant hit among the staff and clients as soon as she sashayed her way in.

Added Edmund, “Warm, playful and always with a big smile, she exuded not just an alluring charm, but wit and intelligence as well.”

But more than Bollywood, Edmund said that Nicole talked more passionately about earth-related issues like global warming, imbalance in nature, environmental hazards and even eco-tourism.

She also declared her affection for the Filipino people. “Filipinos have always been gracious to me and everywhere I meet Filipinos they always show me warmth and love,” she noted, adding that she’s aware of the Pinoys’ penchant for music, drama, sports and beauty pageants.

Whether or not she’s truly committed to saving Earth for the present and future generations, she seemed sincere and straightforward in her desire to make a difference on the planet, which has been confronted by catastrophes natural and man-made lately.

“At present,” said Edmund, “Nicole is promoting the use of solar energy as a better source of power. She even partnered with a Bangalore company (U Solar) to promote awareness about using the sun’s renewal energy that can greatly reduce humanity’s dependence on fossil fuels. Even if you’re not wholly interested in such topics, you’d be converted. And you would wish that after her reign, Nicole would continue her advocacy to save and preserve Mother Earth.”

Being beauty queen is about character: Sushmita: Good height and an attractive face are just not enough to get a place in Sushmita Sen's Wadhawan Lifestyle I Am She contest. The former beauty queen and actress says the most important criterion for selection is a person with "good character".

"When I say character, I mean that a lot of women who come are very beautiful but some of them can do anything to achieve what they want. Such girls don't belong to I Am She," Sushmita told in an interview. (ibnlive.in.com)

Miss Brazil robbed at gunpoint : Miss Brazil was robbed at gunpoint outside her Sao Paolo home Sunday night, the beauty queen confirmed on Twitter. Debora Lyra, 21, tweeted: "For how long will these criminals keep doing this? I was just robbed at the door of my house."

Pageant winner Katie Blair reshapes her reputation: Redemption is the theme of Blair's story of her return to the pageant circuit. "I swore up and down I wasn't going to do a pageant again," she said during a phone interview from Los Angeles, where she now lives. "But I wanted the opportunity to recover from my term as Miss Teen USA."

Her reign was marred by massive media coverage surrounding the carousing of the then-Miss USA, Tara Conner, who went into an alcohol abuse rehab program to retain her title. Blair, who admitted to underage drinking but denied other accusations made in the tabloid press, was dropped as a spokesperson for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Blair was part of Donald Trump's MTV reality show "Pageant Place," which also followed the lives of Miss USA and Miss Universe. (billingsgazette.com)

No drama Miss Botswana: By this time next week Botswana will have a new beauty queen who will become the jewel of the nation and will represent us at the Miss World pageant. This year’s pageant’s significance is at an all time high since it comes of the backdrop of last year’s amazing rising of Emma Wareus who became Miss World first princess.

The Miss Botswana pageant has gone through a lot of challenges over the years. At some point the pageant was threatened by irrelevance as many failed to relate to it. In the year 2008, Leapfrog and 63 Entertainment took over the organisation of the pageant and it was instantaneously transformed into a glitz and glamour affair where all of Gaborone’s flamboyance is paraded. Even this make over brought it’s own salvo of controversy and drama, some questioned the judging and a participant threatened to take the pageant to court for an interdict to stop it from going on. Thankfully, it seems like this year Miss Botswana will go on without a hitch. (gazettebw.com)
