Controversy over Miss World voting: Rumours are surfacing that one aspect of last weekend's Miss World beauty contest in China may have been 'fixed'. American teenager Alexandria Mills was crowned Miss World on Saturday.

Yet new reports are surfacing that suggest the 18-year-old's victory was primarily the result of ongoing diplomatic tensions between Norway and China following Liu Xiaobo's controversial Nobel Prize win, according to the UK Daily Mail. The article speculates that judges at the ceremony, held in Sanya on China's tropical Hainan Island, may have bowed to pressure from Beijing. China's government is said to be furious that the Oslo-based Nobel Prize committee chose to honour Liu, a jailed dissident, last month. (nzherald.co.nz)

Did Nobel Peace Prize affect Miss World outcome?: The Daily Mail is reporting a controversy arising from the Miss World pageant. The website says that the celebrations of newly crowned Miss World Alexandria Mills, 18, of Louisville, were "tainted by claims that her biggest rival, Miss Norway, was cheated out of the title by the competition's Chinese hosts."

As the Mail tells the tale:

However, insiders were shocked that stunning 23-year-old Norwegian university graduate Mariann Birkedal - the odds-on favorite - didn't even make the top five. According to reports last night, observers speculated the judges bowed to pressure from Beijing, which is involved in a bitter international spat with Norway.

China is said to be furious after the Oslo-based Nobel Peace Prize committee awarded the coveted prize to the jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo earlier this month. Kathrine Sorland, a Norwegian TV personality who came in fourth in the contest in 2002, told the Mail: "I would stress that Miss World competitions have always been political. And the relations between China and Norway are very strained at the moment." As for Birkedal, who didn't make it to the final five, she said, "It is kind of stupid to start thinking that if this or that had not occurred I would perhaps have been Miss World 2010. I do believe everything happens out of a reason." (usatoday.com)
