2010 Bb. Pilipinas Universe dethroned

Venus Raj

Manila, Philippines - Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) has stripped 2010 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe titleholder Maria Venus Raj of her crown because of citizenship issues.

“Yesterday, March 29, 2010, Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. decided, with a heavy heart, to let Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2010 Maria Venus Raj go after the organization discovered inconsistencies contained in her birth records, in contrast to her personal account of her birth,” BPCI said in a statement issued yesterday.

BPCI corporate and public relations manager Genny Marcial said Raj’s birth certificate showed she was born in Camarines Sur. She and her mother, however, claimed she was born in Doha, Qatar.

Her father, Vincent Raj, registered as a Catholic Filipino in her birth certificate, was discovered to be an Indian national and is not married to her mother, contrary to what is stated in her birth record.

“The legal document (Raj’s birth certificate) is indeed authentic. The information in the document, however, is fabricated, it being filed three years after Venus’ birth by her mother’s cousin who, at the time, worked in the civil registrar’s office,” Marcial said. “BPCI only discovered this accidentally after the coronation, the admission coming straight from the mouth of Ms. Raj, and later on, her mother.”

Binibining Pilipinas Universe second runner-up Nicolette Henson will replace her as the country’s representative to the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. First runner-up Dianne Necio is not yet qualified to join the international pageant because she is only 17 years old. Miss Universe has a qualifying age requirement of 18.

Three Bb. Pilipinas-Universe titleholders had been dethroned for nationality issues. These are Anjanette Abayari (Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1991) and Tisha Silang (Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1998), both born and raised in the United States; and Janelle Bautista (Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1999), who was born in Canada.

MANILA, Philippines—A farm girl from Camarines Sur won the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe crown Saturday night.

Maria Venus Raj inherited the title from last year’s winner Pamela Bianca Manalo in a glittering four-hour pageant at Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Raj, 21, who will compete in the Miss Universe contest later this year, was voted Miss Friendship by fellow candidates. She also won the Best in Long Gown and Best in Terno awards.

Raj, 5-foot-10 and measuring 35-22-35, told the Inquirer: “This victory means a lot to me. All my sacrifices paid off. This is the result of all the support from my family, friends, loved ones … even strangers.”

The new beauty queen graduated cum laude with a degree in Communication Arts from Bicol University. She confirmed reports of her humble upbringing.

“Our house is in the middle of a farm in Bato, Camarines Sur. Walking on the borders of the rice paddies (pilapil) was my early training in walking on runways,” the part-time model said in English and Filipino. She said that her family still lived on the same farm.

GMA 7 contract artist Krista Kleiner was proclaimed Binibining Pilipinas-International and named Best in Talent and Best in Swimsuit.

Czarina Catherine Gatbonton from Malolos, Bulacan, was the surprise winner of the Binibining Pilipinas-World title. The 19-year-old college student was the only candidate to introduce herself in Filipino. She also answered her question in Filipino. She will compete in the Miss World contest also later this year.

The three titleholders bagged a prize package that included a P250,000-contract with Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc., accident insurance worth P2 million, wardrobe and accessories from Cumbia worth P150,000, as well as cash and products from Natasha worth P50,000.

Raj’s fellow Bicolana, 17-year-old Dianne Necio, was first runner-up, while Pampanga’s Helen Nicolette Henson was second runner-up. Henson was also named Miss Photogenic, Miss Fit n’ Right and Miss Philippine Airlines.

Selena Antonio and Laurese Ann Caparas, who bagged the popularity-based Shoppers’ Choice and Texters’ Choice awards, respectively, failed to make it to the semifinals.

Actors Dingdong Dantes and Carla Abellana hosted the pageant ceremonies. Broadcaster Mike Enriquez, boxing champ Nonito Donaire and 1970 Miss International Aurora Pijuan were among the judges of the competition televised on GMA 7.

Bb. Pilipinas 2010: Hataw Beauties Top 10

By Ranz

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Bb. Pilipinas - Universe 2010
Candidate #10 Maria Venus Raj - I find her very competitive. I think she's prepared and ready for any international competitions. I'm not just so sure about how far she will go in Miss Universe since Jennifer Hawkins, Dayana Mendoza and Stefania Fernandez are the latest looks in Miss Universe. But if Ada de la Cruz did almost win last year, I'm sure Venus will also have the same chance.

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Bb. Pilipinas - World 2010
Candidate #13 Gwendoline Ruais - Though she's competing at a very high level, i still consider her performance unpolished. She's not your conventional beauty queen type, but you can't simply ignore her. Her being natural will be her biggest advantage. A beauty queen doesn't need to be perfect and polished at all times. In Miss World, you don't always need to look overcooked and glamazon to win.

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Bb. Pilipinas - International 2010
Candidate #16 Toni Alyessa Hipolito - I like her very hollywood look. Her fair complexion will work best in Miss International.

Special Mentions:

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Candidate #18 Helen Nicolette Henson - She's my next bet for Miss Universe and Miss International. Just like Toni, her fair complexion will compensate well in Miss International. In Miss Universe, I see some resemblance of Rachael Anne Finch (Miss Australia) on her - a not so tall lady with a standout presence and a gorgeous face. She just need to work on her body.

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Candidate # 11 Krista Arrieta Kleiner - Another worthy contender. Best fit for Bb. Pilipinas - International title.

To Complete my Top 10:

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Candidate # 04 Selena Antonio

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Candidate # 08 Ana Marie Morelos

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Candidate # 14 Mary Ann Ross Misa

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Candidate # 21 Czarina Catherine Gatbonton

Bb. Pilipinas 2010
Candidate # 22 Dianne Necio

Confessions of a Beauty Queen

Lia Andrea Ramos
Lia Andrea Ramos
The quest for the fairest-of-them-all is on once again. The tropical heat of the impending summer is a perfect excuse to flaunt beautiful bodies. Contests abound, from the best-in-bikini contests to the prestigious Bb. Pilipinas, which just recently presented their candidates.

Many mothers, maybe with secret and unfulfilled dreams of being models or beauty queens themselves, love to see their teenage daughters walk the pageant or fashion runway.

We got hold of Lia Andrea Ramos, 2006 Bb. Pilipinas Universe and Ms. Photogenic winner in the Miss Universe pageant that year, to share her beauty contest experience and how it changed her life.

PHILIPPINE STAR: Was being a model and beauty queen ever part of your dream list when you were young?

LIA ANDREA RAMOS: Being a model and beauty queen was not on my dream list. When I was asked to join Binibini in 2001, I said no because I never imagined myself as a beauty queen. Five years later, I decided to give it a shot. When I won, the opportunity to become a model just happened and I found myself traveling to South Africa for my first full-time modeling stint. There are opportunities in life that you can’t allow to slip by. I don’t want to look back one day and regret not grabbing the opportunities that came my way.

What preparations did you do for the pageant?

Physically, I had to train at the gym and go on a strict and healthy diet. I wasn’t in my best shape because I didn’t really work out before that and I wasn’t engaged in any sports. I had to work out and I had a personal trainer working closely with me. I also had to learn to walk on three- to four-inch heels, know more about makeup, and polish my skills on public speaking.

Were you regularly working out even before you got into this beauty contest?

Unfortunately not. I have always been slim so I thought I didn’t need it, but I realized working out is not just about losing weight. It’s also about having a healthier body. And as one gets older, one’s metabolism slows down so it’s important to include working out in one’s fitness regimen.

What were your preparations during the Miss Universe competition?

I had a more rigorous training at the gym. I did weight training, Pilates and cardio-dance classes. John Cuay (personal trainer) and Cristy Marasigan (senior dietitian) from my gym helped me with my training and diet. I cut down on carbs and increased my protein intake. I ate more vegetables, fruits, and nuts. I stayed away from chips and chocolates.

What part of your body are you most proud of? Why?

I’d have to say my abs because I work very hard to keep it toned.

What part of your body needs further improvement?

Definitely my thighs. I have the tendency to put on weight there so I have to constantly work them out.

What is your fave gym exercise?

I enjoy my Pilates and boxing classes.

Do you follow any strict diet?

I used to when I was preparing for the pageant and modeling abroad. But now, I am more lax. I try to avoid eating my carbs at night, and I try to stick to my white meat and veggies. But sometimes, I grab some pizza and chips. I also love pasta!

How much sleep do you get every day?

On the average, eight hours. I feel tired or cranky when I get less.

Any vices?

I drink, but as I’ve grown older, I drink less.

Do you have cheat days when you don’t watch what you eat at all?

Any day can be a cheat day as long as you make up for it the following day at the gym.

What food cravings do you succumb to?

I love potato chips! I always have a stash at home.

What is your current fitness goal?

To lose some inches off my thighs and be very toned again.

What is your current regular exercise and diet regimen?

I go to the gym three to four times a week. I started boxing classes a month ago and I try to do that at least three times a week. I do Pilates class once a week. I regularly eat chicken, lean red meat, fish, and salad. For my carbs, I eat brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and potato.

After winning the pageant, what other projects did you get into?

I worked as a model in Cape Town, South Africa where I did TV commercials and print jobs for the European, American, and South African markets. Recently, I finished some work for The Asia Foundation, an international NGO, on a human rights innovation marketplace project. I am also doing something exciting with Gold’s. We are setting up Estudio at Gold’s Gym, an academy that offers development programs on fitness and character development. We will be tapping certified gym trainers, nutritionists, life coaches, top models, former beauty queens, photographers, and stylists, among others, to handle the classes of Estudio (call Luisa Beltran at 994-2930 for details).

Do you believe that beauty is a total package?

Beauty is definitely a total package. It’s physical and inner beauty combined. Beauty is about exuding confidence, grace, charm, and intelligence. I find someone who carries herself well and comfortable in her own skin beautiful.

Miss World loves Gibraltar

Miss World Kaiane Aldorino
Kaiane Aldorino
New Miss World Kaiane Aldorino, 23, has told the Olive Press how she loves coming home to Gibraltar.

The hospital administrator, who won the title in December, said: “I love coming back to live a normal life again.”

The down-to-earth girl continued: “It is totally unique, a really special place.

“There is nothing like the amazing views from the top, to Africa and into Spain.

“I also love the beaches, the lighthouse and the people are so friendly.”

Aldorino beat favourite Miss Puerto Rico after triumphing in the swimsuit competition.

The bilingual beauty is about to set off on another trip to Korea, having just got back from Japan and Brunei.

She is still amazed at the 15,000 people who turned up to her victory parade. “There were more people than even National Day,” she said.

Aldorino, whose boyfriend works on a cruise ship, was described by Chief Minister Peter Caruana as a “very special lady, who has put Gibraltar on the map!”

Denis MacShane MP, the former Europe Minister, described her win as “a victory for a Spanish-speaking European woman who live on the Mediterranean under the British flag,”.

He added: “I just hope she doesn’t meet Tiger Woods.”
