Brazil's bet is Miss Earth 2009

Miss Earth 2009 Larissa Ramos
Miss Earth 2009 Larissa Ramos
Manila - Brazil's Larissa Ramos was crowned 2009 Miss Earth during the coronation night at The Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center on Boracay Island Sunday night, besting 79 other beauties from around the world.

Ramos succeeded 2008 Miss Earth Karla Paula Henry from the Philippines.

The Philippines' Sandra Seifert was named Miss Air (1st Runner-up), Venezuela's Jessica Barboza was hailed Miss Water (2nd Runner-up), and Alejandra Echevarria of Spain got the title Miss Fire (3rd Runner-up).

For this year's final round, the final 8 candidates from Brazil, Philippines, Venezuela, Spain, Colombia (Alejandra Castillo Múnera), Martinique (Pascale Nelide), Poland (Izabela Wilczek) and Thailand (Rujinan Phanseethum) were asked to pick photos that represented international issues about the planet.

Each candidate was given 30 seconds to express her thoughts on a particular environmental subject.

Ramos chose the photos showing the problem of air pollution. She stated: "I come from a country that has the largest rainforest in the world. It is also known as the lungs of the world -- Brazil. But we cannot just say that we are the lungs of the world because my country also produces a lot of air pollution as well."

Miss Earth is considered one of the 3 largest beauty pageants in the world.

What makes the beauty competition unique though is that the participants themselves are involved in environmental causes, with the titleholder dedicating her yearlong reign to promote environmental projects and address issues concerning the environment.

The 2009 coronation night was hosted by television personality and host Marc Nelson, model Borgy Manotoc and former VJ Sarah Meier.

Beauty Pageant + Reality Show Format

By Ranz

Here's how it goes:

1. Swimsuit Competition: The 16 Semifinalists will compete in Swimsuit.

Example (Host): Miss Earth says goodbye and thank you to "Miss Russia."

Miss Russia's co-finalists will hug her goodbye. Miss Russia will go centerstage. May magbibigay sa kanya ng flowers. Miss Russia is now teary-eyed habang patuloy nating nakikita ang video niya sa background. She's waving her fans goodbye.

Ex. (Host): Next, we have to say goodbye to 'Miss Australia.'

Again, hug mula sa mga co-finalists niya. Her video will play sa background sa parehong pagsagot sa tanong na ''Ano ang natutunan mo sa pagsali sa Miss Earth" (or other kind of question). Miss Australia will go centerstage. May magbibigay ulit ng flowers. Palakpakan ang audience.

Nag-uumpisa na tayong mag-create ng tension sa puntong ito.

Ex. (Host): It's your time to say goodbye "Miss Japan."

Ex. (Host): Only 12 ladies will move to the next round. Another one has to go. So Miss Earth says goodbye to you "Miss Peru."

2. Evening Gown Competition: The 12 Semifinalists will parade and compete in their Gowns.

Greece
India
Mexico
Colombia
Puerto rico
Venezuela
China
South Africa
Thailand
Brazil
Philipines
USA

After this round, 4 na low-scorers ulit ang aalisin:

Ex. (Host): First to say her goodbye is the beautiful "Miss Brazil."

Miss Australia will go centerstage. May magbibigay ulit ng flowers. Palakpakan ang audience.

Ex. (Host): Goodbye to you & thank you "Miss Thailand."

Ex. (Host): Now, we say our goodluck & goodbye to "Miss Mexico."

Ex. (Host): Thank you ... "Miss Greece."

3. Video Interview: The 8 Semifinalist will face the Q & A. Ito ang Video Interview na tradition na sa Miss Earth Pageant.

India
Colombia
Puerto rico
Venezuela
China
South Africa
Philipines
USA

Ex. (Host): Miss Earth says goodbye and thank you to "Miss South Africa."

Ex. (Host): Next is "Miss China."

Ex. (Host): Miss says goodbye to "Miss Philippines."

Ex. (Host): The last to say her goodbye is the lovely "Miss Colombia."

India
Puerto rico
Venezuela
USA

Boracay host to 80 beauty queens

Boracay Philippines
Boracay Philippines
The world-famous island paradise of Boracay is the setting of the 9th Miss Earth beauty pageant—with the newly built Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center as venue for the coronation night on Nov. 22, to be aired at 10 p.m. on ABS-CBN.

Boracay is hosting 80 Miss Earth candidates, now billeted at the Fairways and Blue Water.

This is the first time the Miss Earth finals will be conducted outside Luzon. Its first seven editions were held in Metro Manila, while last year’s was at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.

Likewise, this is the first time Boracay is hosting an international beauty contest. Pageant organizer Carousel Productions said it will take full advantage of the magnificent location.

“We will show the beauty of Boracay from sunrise until after sundown. The production will show the pageant night as if it happened throughout the day,” Carousel executive vice president Lorraine Schuck told Inquirer Entertainment during the candidates’ press presentation Nov. 4 in “Mader’s Garden,” the Pasig City residence of beauty guru Ricky Reyes.

At the same press presentation, Schuck revealed another surprise: “The pageant’s official jeweler Ramona Haar designed a new crown, embellished with some 80 gemstones donated by countries participating in the pageant.”

To adhere to the pageant’s environmental thrust, the new crown also used 100 percent recycled precious metals comprised of 14-karat gold and argentums sterling silver. It is estimated to cost $100,000 and will require escorts to guard it wherever it is displayed, said Schuck.

These developments approximate the upgrades that rival beauty tilt Miss Universe made this year. The Donald Trump-owned pageant was held in a resort destination, the Bahamas, and also revealed a new crown.

The Miss Universe contest marked its first back-to-back win with Venezuela’s Stefania Fernandez, taking the title from compatriot Dayana Mendoza.

Hometown bet Sandra Inez Seifert is poised to inherit the crown from outgoing queen Karla Paula Henry, also of the Philippines.

Seifert, a Negros-raised Filipino-German nurse, already snagged two major preliminary awards—Best in Swimsuit and Best in Evening Gown.

Before Carrie Prejean: 7 disgraced beauty queens

Carrie Prejean
Carrie Prejean
Carrie Prejean's sex tape scandal is just the latest chapter in America's long history of fallen pageant winners.

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean has admitted making a sex tape for a boyfriend as a teenager and is describing the episode as "the biggest mistake of my life." But she's hardly the first beauty queen to endure public embarrassment. Here are several of her more notable predecessors:

Vanessa Williams
In 1983, Williams became the first black winner of the Miss America pageant. Ten months later she was pressured to resign her crown when Penthouse magazine published nude photos of her posing with another woman. Williams says that the pictures were innocent--that she was merely helping a photographer she worked for conceptualize a shoot--and that they were never meant to be made public. She initially filed a lawsuit against Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione, but later dropped the case to focus on her music career. She has subsequently enjoyed great success as both a singer and actress.

Katie Rees
After being named Miss Nevada USA in 2006, Rees lost her title when photos emerged of her flashing her breasts and her thong underwear and kissing other young women in a nightclub. Last year, she was arrested for assaulting a cop after a traffic stop and subsequently detained in Australia on suspicion of drug trafficking (no charges were filed).

Lindsay Evans
The 2008 winner of Miss Louisiana Teen USA pageant became a household name when she skipped out on a restaurant bill and left behind her purse containing a small bag of marijuana. When she returned to retrieve the purse, she was arrested for both theft and drug possession. She lost her title ten days before the end of her reign.

Marjorie Wallace
The first American ever to win the Miss World pageant quickly became a tabloid celebrity linked to various famous men including married Welsh crooner Tom Jones and British soccer star George Best. According to the New York Times, she resigned her crown after Best was charged with burglarizing her home. She went on to enjoy later success as a talkshow host.

Tara Conner
Although Tara Conner, Miss USA 2006, was one of the worst-behaved pageant queens, she was not stripped of her title thanks to the support of business mogul (and owner of the Miss USA franchise) Donald Trump. Days after newspaper reports that the party girl had tested positive for cocaine, Trump announced Conner was going to rehab, but would keep her title.

Lauren Caitlin Upton
The 18-year-old Upton, representing South Carolina in the Miss Teen USA 2007 competition, became an overnight internet sensation for her incoherent, rambling response to a question about why so many Americans can’t locate their own country on a map. She replied: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as in, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children."
(Watch Lauren Caitlin Upton give her timeless response about Americans and maps)

Amy Polumbo
Miss New Jersey 2007 pre-empted greater scandal when she announced that would-be blackmailers were threatening to release old photos from her Facebook page if she refused to relinquish her title. Polumbo later released photos of herself drinking and partying. "They're not that bad, but they were meant to be private," Polumbo said.
